WUF brings together national, regional, and local governments, academics, business leaders, urban planners and civil society.

The theme of WUF 12 is ‘It all starts at home: Local actions for sustainable cities and communities’.

You can meet the RUAF team at the following events:

Voices from Cities: Youth voices and innovations on climate resilient urban food and water systems

November 6th, 11:00-12:30, Room B

Co-organised by RUAF, Hivos, Dreamtown, and Global Infrastructure Basel (GiB), this 90-minute session is space for youth innovators from urban communities in the Global South to be heard. It will showcase knowledge gained about the urban food and water systems of the cities to date, and provide an opportunity for direct dialogue over climate related issues and priorities and various ideas on how to address them. In addition to discussing what to do to strengthen urban resilience, the event will explore how to do it by engaging and involving young people in decision making.

The will bring together youth activists and city officials from several city regions, involved in three programmes: ‘Urban Futures: Youth action for inclusive, climate-resilient urban food systems’, managed by Hivos, in partnership with RUAF and local organizations; Dreamtown’s ‘Cool Waters: Youth-led climate adaptation along Nairobi rivers’; Safe and Sound Cities, that aims to improve young people’s safety and wellbeing in urban environments, led by GiB in partnership with ICLEI. Both Urban Futures and Safe and Sound Cities are funded by Botnar Foundation.

Training event: Governing the Water Energy Food Nexus – learning from African cities

November 7th, 9:00-12:00, Multipurpose room 1

This training event is co-organized by RUAF, CGIAR Resilient Cities Initiative, FAO, and ICLEI. It is intended for city representatives and non-governmental organizations that advise and accompany cities in their food systems work. You will learn how to apply the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus approach to address resource constraint challenges, and how to develop outcome-driven indicators to focus minds on priorities, desired outcomes, and how to achieve them.

By the end of the training event, participants will:

  • be informed and inspired by practical initiatives in Nairobi and Cape Town;
  • have the opportunity to consider and discuss how the water-energy-food nexus approach might be helpful (or put to better use) in their own cities;
  • experience for themselves the process of identifying possible indicators that would support action to increase food system resilience from a WEF perspective.
