Despite their differences, those involved in the food system of the city of Quito are joining forces for the first time. The city depends heavily on imports from other regions because Quito produces only 5 percent of the food its population needs. The ideal is to have a solid food system with little waste, which gives each consumer a healthy diet and the farmer a fair price.
To address these problems, Rikolto, RUAF, the Center for Rural Development in Latin America (RIMISP) and several departments of the Municipality of Quito worked together. Together they articulated the different actors involved in the food system to work together in what would become the multi-stakeholder platform “Pact Agro-Food of Quito” (PAQ).
