EcoTipping Point Project

An EcoTipping Point is a key part of an eco-social system that can reverse the direction of change. It’s catalytic – a lever that can turn the environment from decline to health and sustainability. Small actions can make a big difference when they tap the inborn powers of nature and human societies to heal themselves. Many ecological problems look so complex, it's hard to know where to begin. But eco-pioneers around the world are showing what it takes to turn a problem around. Some case studies about community gardens, edible schoolyards, community agro-forestry etc.

Convention on biological diversity

Signed by 150 government leaders at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Convention on Biological Diversity is dedicated to promoting sustainable development. Conceived as a practical tool for translating the principles of Agenda 21 into reality, the Convention recognizes that biological diversity is about more than plants, animals and micro organisms and their ecosystems – it is about people and our need for food security, medicines, fresh air and water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live.

The Water, Engineering and Development Centre offers distance learning modules on Water and Waste Engineering, Water and Environmental Management, and Infrastructure in Emergencies. Two postgraduate programmes can be studied entirely by distance learning at one of three levels: MSc, Diploma or Certificate. You can also study individual modules to develop your professional skills rather than doing a whole programme.

Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research is an environmental research organisation in New Zealand that specialises in sustainable management of land resources to optimise primary production, enhance biodiversity, increase the resource efficiency of businesses, and conserve and restore the natural assets of communities. The website provides information, frameworks and processes that can be used by those wishing to engage different stakeholders more effectively in research and development. Numerous on-line papers and reports are available.
